Data Center Relocation
Confidential Client Design / Engineering to Relocate an Existing Data Center
Problem:
Diamondback Design Group (DDG) was requested to provide Engineering and Design services for CSA Architectural, Structural, Mechanical HVAC, Plumbing, Process Piping, Fire Protection, Electrical Power, Telecom, Security, Fire Alarm and I&C, in support of the Data Center Relocation from one building to another on the same campus.
Diamondback Design Group was requested to provide programming and design services to construct a new Tier 3 Data Center room in the southwest sector of an existing Lab Space. The new space needed to be approximately 3,300 S.F. with an additional separate 650 S.F. Staging Room with IT space within. The new space needs to accommodate 40 racks relocating from the existing Data Center plug 80 future racks for a total of 120 racks.
Solution:
Provide code review including required egress plan for the new spaces. A new egress door & stairs was required to maintain the required egress for the existing DPG Lab. Design perimeter walls to reduce ambient noise transfer from equipment (80 dBA) to adjacent spaces. Perimeter walls & deck above were designed to prevent transfer of moisture vapor. Designed hot aisle / cold aisle enclosures as required.
The existing raised metal floor was removed based on tier 3 requirements. Under floor utilities were removed and rerouted. The remaining floor system was repaired to accommodate the new floor to deck wall. The new space received new floor finishes.
Performed engineering evaluation of ventilation air (OSA) supply to determine adequacy to be provided for new DC space. Engaged certified Test & Balance contractor to provide field testing and provide report of existing HVAC conditions for use in evaluation. Selected and designed the install of new N+1 HVAC equipment required to the new Data Center and Staging area. New HVAC equipment was floor mounted CRAC units with dual coil chilled water and DX backup. CRAC units designed for redundant power input. Designed Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle HVAC approach with downflow air, ceiling plenum return and floor supply.
Replaced existing light fixtures and exit signs with new LED. Coordinated new light fixture locations with hot/cold aisles and other RCP items. Designed install of new lighting controls systems, all fixtures are motion sensor controlled. Designed install of (1) new diesel emergency generator. Designed the install of new close transition ATS’s with external bypass panels. Designed the install of new 300KVA UPS, battery cabinets, and external bypass panel.
Programming and Construction Documents were completed in 14-weeks.
